About This Course
You have the potential to positively impact the lives of children, families, and communities. Our comprehensive two- year Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED) Diploma program is designed to train you in delivering high-quality child care across diverse settings and creating dynamic play experiences for the children under your supervision.
The ECED diploma program provides students with a range of online learning choices, including both synchronous and asynchronous options. In synchronous learning, students participate in day or evening virtual classes in real-time, engaging with instructors and fellow students.

Prior Learning Policy
- Credit for Prior Learning
AEC will not grant course credit for education or training completed at other institutions, and/or for work experience.
AEC will grant course credit for education completed at AEC (for the Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED) Certificate program only).
Students are eligible to transfer 100% of course credit from the Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED) Certificate program completed at the AEC if they meet the following guidelines:
- Students must submit all transfer documentation pertaining to their program before the first day of class.
- Courses that are used to apply for advanced standing must have been awarded a minimum grade of D.
- It is the student’s responsibility to submit the appropriate documents for course transfer.
ECED program is not transferable to other post-secondary institutions.
Admission Requirements
Students must meet ONE of the following criteria:
- Alberta high school diploma, verified by transcript, or non-Alberta equivalent,
OR
- Successful completion of the General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
- Credit in English Language Arts 30-1, or English Language Arts 30-2, or equivalent
Mature Admission
Students must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be 18 years or older.
2. Must complete an academic achievement test Wonderlic to demonstrate required competency.
3. Credit in English Language Arts 30-1, or English Language Arts 30-2, or equivalent
English language proficiency requirements
- 1.If an individual completed their education in a country where English is the primary language of instruction throughout all levels of schooling.
The applicant should submit official transcripts to demonstrate English language proficiency.
- 2.If an individual completed their education in a country where English is not the primary language of instruction throughout all levels of schooling, the ECED program requires student to achieve scores, equal to or higher than the specified minimum to demonstrate proficiency in the language.
- Original CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program).
Level 7 must be achieved in all areas (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) within the same exam result.
- IELTS General (International English Language Testing System)
A score of 6 must be achieved in all in areas (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
Pre-practicum requirement
1. Police Information Check Requirement:
A current Police Information Check (PIC) with a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) must be submitted prior to practicum placements. The existence of a criminal record may postpone or prevent clinical, practicum, or fieldwork placements and, subsequently, successful completion of the program.
2. Attendance & Course Work Requirement:
Student are expected to maintain a consistent record of attendance and a satisfactory standing in all mandatory courses. Each practicum component has its own minimum requirements, including the completion of relevant theoretical courses, which must be fulfilled prior to practicum placement.
Career Opportunities: Possessing a level 3 early childhood educator certification opens doors to diverse career opportunities, involving caring for children aged birth to eight in a range of environments (in various settings- twelve). These opportunities encompass employment in child care and daycare centres, family day homes, out-of-school care programs, preschools or playschools, recreation centres, kindergarten classrooms, early intervention programs, family support programs and resource centres, and domestic violence shelters. Within this field, individuals may take on roles as educators, assistants, support workers.

In this Early Childhood Education and Development Practicum IV, students concentrate on cultivating language-rich environments and enhancing children’s communication skills. They also delve into Science and Nature Programming, effective communication, cultural competence, and strategies for engaging families in order to create nurturing, inclusive learning environments for children. Additionally, the program covers leadership, administration, and management in the field of Early Childhood Education.
